USB3 (Urban Synth Boys 3): Soohyun Kim & Terry Feng & Yikai Li
USB3 (Urban Synth Boys 3) is a pop music band formed at CCRMA, Stanford University. The trio features Soohyun Kim (Vocal & Keytar), Terry Feng (Mouse Drum & Keyboard), and Yikai Li (GameTrak Bass). USB3 brings the spirit of the laptop orchestra into the world of popular music, creating a distinctive fusion style.
Keyboard (Key-tar): you can pitch-bend each note by shaking the keyboard.
Bass: you play the bass by plucking a wire of a GameTrak controller.
Mouse Drum: you play various drum sounds by clicking and scroll-wheeling.
Computer Music meets City Pop! Welcome to the world of USB3, where everyday computing peripherals become expressive musical instruments. “Peripheral Love” is USB3’s debut single, a song about living in the city and loving computer music (and Chipotle). We’ve carefully designed and mastered the computer peripherals to perform popular music in a new way.
USB3's goal was to bring the spirit of the laptop orchestra into the world of popular music—and we aimed for the most trendy pop genre in 2023.
When this song, Peripheral Love, was born, I was sitting on the couch on the 3rd floor of CCRMA, strumming an unplugged electric guitar and humming the melody—it was the beginning of this whole journey.
Terry, Yikai, and I transformed this song sonically by designing laptop instruments musically aligned with the song—Yikai's super-fast coding skill was the driving force for USB3.
Terry, Alex, Yikai, and I tried going further—not only adopting the laptop peripheral instruments into the song, but we also wanted to explore the musical expressions uniquely achievable with these laptop peripheral instruments by showcasing solos.
