MIDI keyboards typically feature a pitch wheel that allows players to add vibrato or pitch bend effects to their virtual instruments. However, when it comes to expressing the rich, nuanced, and dynamic vibrato and pitch bend techniques ("구슬지다." in Korean) found in Korean traditional instruments, the pitch wheels on MIDI keyboards often fall short in terms of expressiveness.
By utilizing a GameTrak controller, a console game controller from the 2000s that employs pullable wires for three-dimensional game control, I devised a method to capture the nuance of the dynamic vibrato and pitch bend techniques found in Korean traditional music. Pulling a wire controls the instrument's volume. Shaking a wire controls the instrument's pitch shift.
